26-27 March 2011 - Work Party Review

Saturday – 15 volunteers and two rangers (Ranger Iris and Ranger Rudi) worked on the Australian Alps Walking Track between the bridge over the aqueduct (near to Wallace’s Gap) for approx. 1 km up towards Marm Point.  We replaced damaged track markers with the new AAWT yellow markers, made repairs to boggy sections of the track, re-aligned the track to prevent ‘braids’ (where walkers walk off the track around wet/boggy sections thus creating many tracks), and rebenched sections of the track, placed stepping rocks over small creeks, brushcutting, clearing fallen logs and poisoned weeds (sallow willow).

Sunday - 14 volunteers with Ranger Iris and Ranger Rudi tackled the first 1.5km of the Heathy Spur walking track.  We used three brushcutters, cleared fallen logs, placed new track markers and willow weed control.  Many thanks to Ranger Rudi for bringing up fresh supplies from the Mt Beauty Bakery (scrumptious buns in the warm sunshine overlooking Rock Valley dam).

We had perfect autumn weather with warm sunny days, little or no wind, a clear and crisp Saturday night with a warm campfire at Raspberry Hill Camping area.  Ranger Iris camped with us and gave an update on the Alpine National Park current management issues.  Also, we had Fred Gerardson (President of the Victorian National Parks Association) who gave an update on alpine grazing.

Participants: Rod Novak, Dawn Kneen, Betty Witt, Margaret Graham, Jim Harker, Margaret Timbury, Pam Gardner, Janette Kodaih, Geoff Kelly, Marianne Watt, Nick Brown, Ed Kleingeerts, Fred Gerardson, Eileen Clark (Saturday), and Shauna Wilson (first work party).

Several of our long time members commented on the Saturday worksite being so familiar (they had worked there some 14 years ago) .
